So here is my build:
http://pcpartpicker.com/user/igendreau/saved/QRv2FT

Some of the documentation is a little sketchy. MB is a ASRock Z97 Extreme 6 with an EVGA SuperNova Nex 750G for power. I have my 24 pin power connector plugged in. For the 8 pin 12v connector on the motherboard... there are 2 8 pin connectors from the power source: VGA and CPU 1 & 2. I have it connected with CPU 1 at the moment.

When I hit the power button on the motherboard, the Dr Debug lights blink red just for a second, a fan spins for a second, and then nothing. And there is a faint plastic "burning" type smell. Since I'm new at this, I'm not sure where to start trouble shooting. Can anyone point me in the right direction??

Solution

Yes,but the psu is the easiest to check i.e. a new/other one.If you could pinpoint where the smell came from? The rear/output of the psu has no burned smell?

The motherboard could only be visually checked.Look for burn marks (look around the 8pin connector) or capacitors that popped or are expanded.

The only other way again to see is to replace this.

You could try an rma on both and see what happens.

Usually the problem is coming from the "burning" type smell. As most computers don't smell like burning. Could be multiple problems. I would check things in this order wires, PSU, MOBO. I think it's your PSU though.

Here is a better description of the problem. Realized I made the wrong PSU connection. What an idiot...

I have an ASRock Z97 Extreme 6. My PSU is an EVGA Supernova Nex 750G. My 24-pin ATX Power Connector is plugged in correctly. The Extreme6 also has an 8-pin ATX 12V power connector, but says you only need the 2nd 4 pins for extreme overclocking. The PSU has these 2 types of 8 pin connections:

CPU1 & CPU2: Cable is a 1x EPS12V 4+4 pin
VGA1, VGA2, VGA3, VGA4: Cable is a 4x PCI-E 6+2 pin

I mistakenly connected one of the VGA connections to my motherboard's 8 pin slot and powered on. I got a faint "burning smell" and heard something "winding down". Realizing my mistake, I have since switched the cable, so have the CPU1 cable from my PSU connected to the 4 right hand spots on the 8 pin connector (up against Pin 1 & 5). When I turn the power on (using the power button on the motherboard), the Dr Debug light blinks once quickly (all lights, basically an "88"), the CPU fan turns on for a brief second, the PSU fan turns on for a brief second, and then everything turns off.

I have unplugged most of the connections from my board so that now I just have the 24 pin power connector, the 8 pin CPU power connector, my CPU cooler fan plugged in to the CPU fan header, and my RAM, which is in the grey slots (DDR3_A2 & B2). Was trying to just see if I could get power to stay. Same thing.

Did I blow the thing up? And if so, how badly, and is there a way to test what I may have fried? Like is there a good way to make sure my PSU is still working, etc...

Okay, connected all 8 pins to CPU2 at the PSU and on the motherboard. Same thing. Quick blink of power and then everything is off. Don't have another PSU, so I'll have to buy one. Is that the most likely culprit? No concerns that the board is fried?

Well, definitely seems like the PSU. Connected another one to it that I know works, and we've got power. We'll see if there is any more damage now. Great advice. Will try returning the EVGA PSU. Thanks!

Well, update... It powers on but the POST display just reads 00. Have tried unplugging everything and clearing the CMOS. Same result. CPU fan works, and POST display says 00. But that's it. Anything else I can try, or is it time to replace parts? And would you try a new motherboard first, or a new CPU?

So tell me if this is the correct plan of attack...

Was able to return the PSU. New one on the way.
Get a new motherboard and try it out.
If still issues, contact Intel and try to return the CPU

That about right?
