Hi all,

I am new to the forum, but have been building PC's for some time and I am looking to upgrading my graphics card after Christmas.

The main thing that I am constantly swapping my mind about is whether to go for the GTX970, or the R9 290X. Something that's probably been asked a hundred times over for the past few weeks/months.

But mostly, all of the reviews and comparisons I see put the 970 as the clear winner which, I get when it's put down on paper, but when actually being used in games, seems to only give a difference on average of 5-10 FPS. When you are already getting 90 FPS+ for most things, that doesn't (to me at least) seem worth the extra.

What are peoples opinions on this?

Also, one last thing... Backplates. I hear a lot of rumours about these where people say they help keep the card straight or make it safe to touch the back of the card etc.

I have handled plenty of cards and never yet damaged one by touching the back of it and all gaming cards have solid lumps of metal as a heatsink, followed by the fan settings, so I am not entirely sure that a plate on the back would actually make any difference if it was going to warp anyway.

I am inclined to believe that they are purely for aesthetic value and the rest is purely rumour. Is there any evidence to the contrary, as I've not been able to find any so far?

Thanks in advance
