Windows ME Defrag Error No DEFRAG006?

On my COMPAQ presario, I didn't really like WinXP on it, so I formatted the drive and installed Windows ME. Finding drivers was a nightmare. Eventually I got another desktop that was designed for WinME, so I swapped the hard drives from the two computers and reinstalled XP on the compaq. Well since I installed ME back in April 2013, I have not had one successful defragmentation. I use big programs on my computer, so I get bluescreened nearly every week. I don't really mind it, it's a minor inconvenience, but it screws up my hard drive, forcing me to run ScanDisk on thorough. ScanDisk will not finish on thorough. It completes fine on the Standard setting, but on thorough, it freezes when it's about 70% done and I have to close it.

This is extremely annoying because if you haven't run ScanDisk on thorough yet after a bad restart, Disk Defragmenter refuses to run. Every time I try, I get Error No. DEFRAG006: "Disk Defragmenter could not access part of the drive. Try ScanDisk on thorough."

And I would love to follow those instructions, but ScanDisk will not finish on thorough. Maybe it's the hunky 160 GB drive I put in the computer, or the measly 64 MB of RAM that I have. I just want to defrag my drive.

Why?

What do you mean with "big programs"? Large files? Word? Games? And if they cause problems on your Windows ME machine why don´t you use those on the Windows XP machine?

One possible problem might be that you have programs running in the background that cause ScanDisk to stop

64 MB RAM? Really?
32 MB is the MINIMUM to run Windows ME and 64 MB leaves not much space to run programs

so it is no wonder if anything runs slowly or simply stops if any other program (e.g. antivirus, internet connection) is still running.
