I've had this problem for many years on different laptops. I even had it with my old Alienware laptop. What happens is I will be connected just fine, then If I open the network bar on the side I see all of the wifi options disappear and only the one I'm connected to remains (and sometimes a network called 'Hidden Network') . This is when the limited connection Icon pops up where it shows how many bars I have. Usually I have 4-5 bars until this happens, where I must reconnect to get connection again. I've been living with this for years, as I have never found a solution online. After reconnecting I can stay connected without issue anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple hours, its pretty random. This problem really causes issue when I try to play online games, or write something out like this where I reconnect b4 posting just incase it goes limited and lose all I just wrote.

My router is located in the basement, and I'm on the second floor, but this happens even if I'm on the first floor.

I have verizon FiOS for my provider

Happens on many laptops.

The router has been replaced in an attempt to fix this problem to no avail

Added a modem on the first floor connected by ethernet to the basement router, limited access still happens

Running Windows 8, but happened with previous laptops running 7

Turned the Wi-Fi off on the basement router when testing with the modem to rule out interference

I've tried using a USB wifi adapter, had the same issue.

I'm totally out of Ideas and hope someone here can help me, I've been dealing with this for years and don't want to put up with it anymore :( I will be running an ethernet to my room in the coming months, but I still would like to fix this issue. There are no issues with ethernet connection by the way.
