My computer came with one stick of 2gig ddr3 pc3-12800. I bought a stick of 4gig ddr3 pc3-10666.
would it be better to run with just the one stick of 4gig ddr3 pc3-10666 or add the 2gig ddr3 pc3-12800 totaling 6 gig of ram even though it run at a slow speed.and if so should i put the 4 gig in slot 1 and 2gig in slot 2 or the other way around.

Also im running a 1gig nivida gtx 285 which seems to help with speed some.
thanks in addvanced.
I know computers but ive never mixed ram i ussally by kits.

Solution

you can use them both at the same time, it will be fine, they will run at the slowest speed and in single channel, ram speeds do not matter, and if you use 1 stick it will also run in single channel. so put all in :p

I never mix RAM - I buy full kits - usually dual-channel kits (4GB X 2 or 8GB X 2) for a build. When you look at cost benefit vs. potential problems (BSOD, lock ups, OCD management, etc), I would spend the extra money on the RAM kit and not worry.

I usually donate the RAM and/or computer parts to local charities - you can write them off at the current retail price....

oem pc's have this as well, one stick from this brand 2gb and the other stick from another brand and 4gb

I would put them in separate channels - it doesn't really matter which RAM is in which channel (just not the same. Usually mobos are 1 & 3 = channel 1, 2 & 4 channel 2), so use slots 1 & 2 and give it a go

If you run Linux (any flavor) for the OS and XMBC - you will run a lot more reliably.
