I built my computer about a week and a half ago. Everything was working fine, and I didn't notice anything wrong with it. I last used it last night, and before I went to bed I put it to sleep, but did not shut it down. This morning I didn't use it, and after I got home from church I decided to sit down and play some games. Unfortunately, I've run into a very troubling issue. When I tried to wake it from sleep (by pressing space bar on the keyboard), it started to fire up like usual before immediately shutting down. It then kept attempting to turn itself on before shutting down a couple of seconds later. I tried to hold down the power switch to get it to stop, but it wouldn't. Eventually I just flipped the switch on the back of the PSU. When I unflipped the switch and tried to turn it on, the same thing happened. Currently I have a computer with the PSU switch flipped off that is utterly useless. I fear the motherboard is shorted out. I purchased it at microcenter, and I didn't buy the 20 dollar or whatever protection plan. Will they still be able to replace it? Please help!

S.M.A.R.T stands for Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology. It is for HDD monitoring, basically an early warning system to a potential failure.
When you disable it in BIOS you permit the PC to start normally without detecting the malfunctioning HDD. That's what's happening with my PC, I have a failing HDD for which I had to turn off SMART in order to reboot properly.

There is also in "Boot"(in my BIOS) a setting to turn off the F1 Warning that the HDD is bad.
Hello...1) Try to do a CMOS battery removal and Clear/Reset first, to stop the LOOP.
When you leave your computer on over night, you allow the possibilty of Automatic Updates or other Windows features to RUN. it's possible something is trying to complete.
You can start a RMA yourself, if they have a Non return policy, call them to find out.

That's a strong possibility considering your initial problem. Try swapping the sata cable, then try putting it into another slot.

Ok now Im super confused. I was about to switch the cables until I read what Ironsounds said about the bios thing... But when I turned my PC back on it booted straight to windows... I guess Im happy its working but equally concerned that this happened in the first place...

Hello... Sleep mode and suspend to Disk type methods/settings are not fool proof on alot of MB's, Hardware and BIO's... and adding in AUTOMATIC upgrading and Windows task manager/maintenance setting can cause alot to happen to your Computer while you are sleeping.

Ok so the same issue I described happened again. As before pressing reset fixed the problem. I am now looking in BIOS for SMART, do you know where that setting might be? (I have an asus z97-ar)

I'd look close to the SATA settings since it's got to do with the disks.

Actually I had to go pick out a Christmas tree with the family... could not find the smart thing beforehand. Just now tried to power on PC, and nothing happened. My gpu and fans lit up like they should but I got no monitor output. POST error lights flashed by the ram and the cpu. I know those weren't the problem from before, though. I think the hdd just finally kicked the can. I knew I should have gone with an ssd :/

Try to find the SMART setting and turn it off then tell us all what happened. The most probable reasons why your PC is behaving like this are the CPU and the HDD, one of which has probably gone.
