New Build M5A97 R2.0 Hanging at ASUS Splash Screen

I just bought this new mobo and cpu, along with compatible RAM for an upgrade to an old system. I've put everything together, made all the proper connections, the board posts just fine and beeps and displays the ASUS logo splash screen. But then it just hangs there. Pressing Del or F2 doesn't do anything. I notice my CPU starts to heat up as if it's under load. The temperature goes from ~26 degrees C to 44 degrees C (reading from CPU cooler case temperature probe). This forces me to have to shut down the system by pressing and holding the case power button after about a minute from cold start. My keyboard is lit up, and working presumably, and I've read elsewhere that using a P/s 2 connection doesn't help the problem (haven't tried it b/c I don't have an old one lying around). As for those other threads, the issue is either not resolved, or it ends up being the PSU or the graphics card. My PSU seems ok as far as the specs go, and I've tried two different GPU's (albeit both geforce cards).

I've checked all connections are properly in place, including the 24 & 8 pin connections. I've cleared the CMOS by removing the battery and swapping the jumper for 10 secs onto pins 2 and 3, and placing the jumper back to pins 1 and 2.

I even tried using my previous GPU, a GeForce 8800 GTS 512mb, with 6-pin power connection, but the logo screen still just hangs there.

Here's the kicker. Before it started doing this, the BIOS was coming up just fine, but my Win 7 64-bit OS was blue-screen dying right after Windows loads, with the error screen stating I should check the disk for errors. So, I just decided to wipe the drive, and start fresh. I formatted it with my laptop, put it back into my system intending to install the OS from an inserted installation DVD, and that's when the logo screen started hanging there...

Any suggestions?
