In the process of getting a new CPU/ Motherboard but I don't have quite enough for an 970. I can save up eventually, but will I get any performance increase out of the i5 with my current card?

Solution
No your HD 7790 won't "bottle neck" the i5. It's the other way around, anyway. The CPU has the potential to bottle neck the gfx card. In your case, you are fine. Which i5 do you have?
Depending on the game, and current processor, maybe (referring to performance increase, not bottlencking, should have clarified). Not as much as a GPU upgrade would however (Depending on CPU)
It will give you a much better upgrade path, and will help down the line more.

Well, I came to the same question, when I was upgrading my computer. I was looking for a cheap card, like a HD 7790, to work with my old dual-core i5-650.

I asked many questions on Tom's hardware, and the common answer was this: At 720p, you'll do fine. So, I got the graphics card, and started playing my favorite games, like Battlefield 4.

When I play (on my 1440x900p monitor), my CPU stays between 75-90% usage when playing Battlefield 4. So, it doesn't look like its bottlenecking my HD 7790. If it was at 90-100% then, it would be bottlenecking it. I ran many benchmarks, and it seems like my PC is playing Battlefield 4 at what it should be playing it.

The Intel core i5-650 is about the worst i5 that has ever been made (for desktop). So, I can easily say, that your card will run great at 720p, or even 900p, like I am.

Now, you can actually see the FPS I'm getting on ultra here (not advertising. this actually has something to do with this thread).

Thank you, planning on getting the i5-4690K and OCing it, but I just wanted to see if I will get a performance increase even with a low-mid tier card before I can save up for a GTX970.

That CPU will run any card to its fullest potential, whether it be a lowly HD 7790 or a monster GTX 970. You're good.
And yes, your HD 7790 will still be the weak link to gaming at 1080p even with the new i5. Unless your existing CPU is a real dog, you won't see any increase in gaming performance with the new i5 until you change cards.

Thank you so much, looking forward to my first Intel! Happy Holidays!
