I have an old, custom built pc that runs Vista that I recieved about a month back, because the previous owner said it had a problem. Problem is that, after the right driver was installed, the graphics card would either face bizarre color distorting or would freeze the machine, or would occasionally crash the machine. The farthest I've gotten into boot was about 30 seconds after the log in sequence when the computer blue screened saying the video driver's state could not be recovered.

The computer had no issues before installing nVidia's right driver, but only had a windows experience index of 1.0 due to lack of graphical capacity. (Standard VGA adapter)

The computer still works in safe mode. I can view and change settings there. I have taken a look inside the computer and blown away a bunch of dust that settled inside the machine, and made sure the card was in place properly. Since it's old, I think the card may or may not be dead.

Any answers are much appreciated.

The graphics card could be bad, Open the system up and inspect the card, is there any damaged caps, leaking caps? When it works with no driver, its using only basic parts of the card, GPU isn't rending anything ,so thats why it works in safemode or with no drivers.

You can try to throw the card into another system and see if will boot with drivers. If not the card is toast. 8500's were good for bad caps.
