I am planning to buy myself an Radeon R9 270. The question is: Do i need a new power supply unit? This is my current PSU

My other components are :

Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200 rated at 2.5 GHz
2x2 GB of DDR2 kingston RAM rated at 800 Mhz
250 Gb HDD @ 7200 RPM

i intend to use a Molex to 6 pin transformer. I also noticed that my psu is dual rail 12v...that means 15 amp on each 12v rail. I was wondering if i could use a rail strictly to power the GPU.

The R9 270 has a max pull of around 75W of power and it's min recommended system spec is a 500W PSU. If you go lower, under high to max load your PC will likely start failing.

Will come down to how much load that rail will hold under stress and what else is connected to it.

The R9 270 may need 2 x 6 pin connectors - or maybe that's the 270x...can't remember!

Actually...the r9 270 draws 75 watts only from the pci-e slot, and another 75w from the single six pin connector for a total of 150 watts.
In the end i bought that gpu...my psu is still running like it is brand new.No problems whatsoever.Beside the gpu, i even overclocked my e5200 to 3.2 Ghz
