So I recently built a custom computer, and everything was working perfectly fine. I finished it around Thanksgiving, and I even used it yesterday. I shut it down after I was done last night. However, when I went to use it tonight, it won't power up anymore.

Here is my build:
Motherboard: ASUS ATX DDR3 2600 LGA 1150 Motherboards Z97-PRO (Wi-Fi AC)
CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K Processor (8M Cache, up to 4.40 GHz) (BX80646I74790K)
RAM: Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM - Blue (HX316C10FK2/16)
GPU:EVGA EVGA GTX980 Superclocked ACX 2.0 4GB GDDR5 256bit, DVI-I, DP x 3, HDMI, SLI Ready Graphics Card Graphics Cards 04G-P4-2983-KR
Case: Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-01 Mid Tower Gaming Case CC-9011050-WW
CPU Fan: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - CPU Cooler with 120mm PWM Fan (RR-212E-20PK-R2)

I unscrewed the CPU Fan to see if there was anything wrong, and I noticed I forgot to peel off a protective plastic part on the bottom of the heatsink, and I'm now worried that when I forgot to remove it, during the time I had my PC on, it fried either the motherboard or the CPU. Help please, this computer was built for my senior project, and it won't turn on anymore, and I have absolutely no clue whats wrong. Power is getting to the motherboard, because I can see the power button on the motherboard lighting up, other than that, I have no clue. Please help. The plastic sticker that was on the bottom of the heatsink isn't melted at all.

Thanks.

UPDATE: I removed the heatsink and removed the sticker that was on the bottom of it. I reapplied thermal paste, and remounted everything. Still no response from the system. Obviously the motherboard is getting some power, because the LED on the powerbutton on the motherboard is working, but I'm still getting no response. I never unplugged any cables or anything, so I don't think that would be it since I was just using it yesterday.

Damn thats unfortunate. I feel for you.

What I would try is to test the cpu on another system and try another cpu on that motherboard. But I don't think melted plastic can get to the motherboard easily. How long did you leave the system on for? Did any melted plastic get on the motherboard or socket? If you left on your system too long that might mean that your cpu overheated.

-Typically- modern cpu's/motherboards won't allow a cpu to cook itself (when possible). However, that doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Ensure your CPU is mounted in the socket properly, as this will also not allow a computer to turn on. Your heatsink attached to the CPU should not be loose either.

Good luck.

First of all, the CPU will shut down if it gets too hot so it's unlikely you fried it. Were you able to remove all of the protective sticker? If not, unplug the power and remove the rest of the sticker now. Reapply thermal paste, if needed.

Then, ensure that all power cables to the motherboard, video card, hard drives, etc. are plugged in properly. Also, double-check the case power switch cables: http://www.build-your-own-computer.net/image-files/computer-wiring-01.jpg

Report back after doing that.

There was no melted plastic anywhere, in fact, the sticker wasn't melted whatsoever.

All the cables are plugged in properly, and I was able to remove the sticker and reapply thermal paste. However, I am still met with no response when pressing either the power button on the case, or the power button on the motherboard

What exactly happens when you turn the power on? Do the fans turn on and does it sound like it is booting up or is it completely silent and you just see the LED on the motherboard light up?

Nothing happens. It's all completely silent. All I see is the LED on the motherboard light up.
