I was looking at a fan controller, one of those that you stick in a 5.25" bay. I saw that its powered by a 4-pin molex connector, and that can be plugged into by 3-pin fans.

Does this mean that all the fans that I route through the controller will get their power from the single molex? Is that safe?

Solution
Perfectly safe.

While I don't know offhand what a single molex is rated for, it could likely power a ridiculous # of fans (think 20+) without issue.
Yes all the fans would be powered off the power supply (molex) feeding the fan controller. They're pretty safe, but you should check the specs of the fan controller. When I got mine, there were a lot of cheap ones out there that were only rated for like 10-12w, I opted for a sunbeam 4 fan rheobus rated for 20w. As it was, it was still fairly inexpensive (maybe $24) but not 'cheapy'.

I never did the math, 70 fans would be different lol. I suppose if that were the scenario, you could just skip a case altogether and zip tie all the fans together - make a case from fans? :p
