Nvidia Crashing/Freezing Computer When Driver Installed

Hello all so yeah the title almost says it all.

Honestly, I've tried so much! This is my last resort *sigh*
So one day I was just playing Dragon Age Inquisition (it had been working beautifully until then) when it just crashes and I have to turn my computer off.
Upon logging back in I was greeted by the a black screen that refused to shift.
After booting in safe mode and after endless research and tests I had no choice but to simply uninstall Nvidia using a driver-sweeper.
I was told that after completely removing it, I could install the latest driver successfully. No such luck. When installing the latest driver it gets to a certain point before Nvidia crashes or freezes the screen forcing me to restart my computer.

It's almost like as soon as Nvidia is enabled again, my system crashes. Some kind of collision?

My Nvidia card isn't in under display adapters in the Device Manager, it's only Intel.

My computer:
Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4200M
8.00 GB
and Intel HD Graphics 4600

My Nvidia is Geforce GT 740M

Any suggestions on where to go next would be most welcome! Thank you!

Ok, the fact that the Nvidia 740M is not showing up under device manager is a major clue. To use that card, you'll have to figure out how you are going to get the driver to install. Not sure if you have to manually disable the Intel 4600 first. I'd think it would interfere with the 740M if both were running, but I'm not sure if there is some form of autodetection.

You'll need to get the drivers to install first before your card will work again.

Thank you for your response!

Interesting... I thought it might be some kind of disagreement with the intel and the Nvidia. I was just worrying about disabling Intel may result in another black screen. I'll give disabling Intel a shot and get the results back to the thread.

Okay so I disabled intel from the device manager.

In normal mode I launched the driver install which didn't work. Instead, I booted in safe mode and amazingly the install ran all the way through without crashing. This added Nvidia back under Display adapters.

It was looking hopeful until when booting back into normal mode, I'm greeted with the black screen of doom. The only way to shift that black screen is to disable Nvidia in safe mode and restart.

Had a feeling this would happen...

It looks like you have remains of the old driver still in place that is causing issues, loading safe mode avoids loading the normal drivers so it gets you around this. Either find a way to get rid of the driver properly or do a re-install.

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll give it a shot!

I was wondering why safe mode got me around it. Is there anything I can do to get rid of said remains? Some kind of sweeper or cleaner?

Also when you say re-install, what exactly do you mean?

Ccleaner (https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download) used to do a good job of cleaning up the old nvidia drivers.

I haven't used it for a long time though. CNET did a review on it a while back.

I would try to uninstall using Ccleaner (or some other utility) and then install the newest drivers on a different drive. This will have windows pointing to the new drive and hopefully not at the old location.

If that fails, it is possible that your video card finally went bad.

Good luck!

Aha good old Ccleaner! Sure thanks for the posts! Would be pretty damn bad if my video card went bad, it's fairly new. I'll give it a go!

When I said re-install, I meant an OS re-install, commonly referred to as a clean install. Like Gamerguy49 said, it is always possible that your GPU fried itself... so keep that in mind.

Make sure you uninstall your current GPU driver before running ccleaner, it might help to clear out the old settings.

I see! Yep heard of clean install. Hopefully I'll get somewhere with this one, thanks!
