I'm planning to build a unit for my son and I will be using my old motherboard and GPU particularly the Gigabyte r7 240 128bits gddr5. The thing is I don't know much about CPUs and I don't know which one should I choose. He will be using it for some school works and a little gaming like NBA2K14 and Black Ops II. I've read on other threads (actually older threads from 2008) that Q6600 is better if i overclock it but i don't know how to do that so probably I won't be doing some overclocking.

PS I know most people would suggest to buy a newer chip but I won't buy newer items here. Not until my son will finish his high school. Thanks!

Understood. Use the Q6600 and overclock it to at least 3.0GHz. It's really very easy to do, and you'll get a serious increase in performance. Just Google up a few of the old Core 2 Quad overclocking Guides. They're still available on many enthusiast websites.

If your particular Q6600 is a G0 Stepping Revision, then most of them will overclock to 3.6GHz at 400MHz x 9 Multiplier, which is DDR2 800. You can check Stepping Revision by running CPU-Z. Just don't exceed 1.500 core voltage or mid-70's core temperatures and you're good.
