Unknown problem, not sure what it is

So lately my computer has been freezing up for a split second and making a loud RRRRRRR! noise like its about to blue screen but then doesn't blue screen.
I'm a little worried if this is serious or not.

My specs:

Video Card: AMD HD 7770
CPU: AMD FX6300
HDD: Some old 500GB Seagate HDD I scrapped from my old computer from the Vista days
Motherboard: MSI 970A G46
8GB of RAM
550W Thermaltake PSU

Could it be the old hard drive dying or something?

Does it only do that while it's playing sound?

It does while playing music sometimes but more often when I'm playing games like Far Cry 4 or just now Borderlands 2.
I hope it's not the card now that I think about it

Sounds like normal behaviour when some part of your system is overloaded (usually from I/O related stuff, but also CPU load). I get this exact thing on my MCPC (an i3 4130) when I'm doing I/O heavy tasks while watching something. It can't keep up and you get annoying (but mercifully short) audio hiccups like the one you describe.
Make sure you disable all tasks while playing games (e.g. file transfers, DLing from the internet, or LAN server related stuff), and see if the problem persists.

Alright that makes sense I guess because of Steam doing all the extra stuff it does while I play games. Thanks for the answer.

Hi there nolastname,

Even though what nitrium suggested may be the case, I would advise you to run a hard drive brand specific testing software in order to check out the HDD's health status. As you mentioned it is an old one, there may be some bad sectors on it that are causing the freezes.
