Introduction:

The R9 280X is a Tahiti XTL based graphics chip which is almost identical to that of the past Radeon HD 7970 graphics card. Known for it's excellent overclocking capability and high bandwidth, this card is seen as an excellent choice for any enthusiasts with a somewhat limited budget. Featured in the basemodel is 3GB of GDDR5 memory with only one 280X pre-installed with 6GB GDDR5 memory, as the older 7970GHz edition was released in with a few. Because this card is from an older series, it still requires you to use the crossfire bridge connector for multi-GPU setups. At a 250W TDP it does not uphold top performance for what power it consumes, though at it's current retail pricing it is a solid choice of Radeon card currently. The core is clocked at 850MHz and memory at 6000MHz and though it is not at a 7970GHz level out-of-the-box, it is ahead of the standard released 7970 back in early 2012. Manufactured at TSMC's 28nm it is not classified as outdated by any means, and is still a top performing card to today's standards. Asus have released a Strix R9 280 along with a 285 but have not made any indication that they will be fitting this cooler on the 280X, this is of a big surprise to us. The cards relative and overclocked performance will be listed later down in the thread. The below lists all of the current R9 280X models available and their in-detail specifications;

Note: All specifications are taken under the following conditions:

-idle/load fan noise are with AUTO fan control settings

-idle/load temperatures are taken with STOCK MANUFACTURER clock settings. Cards can and will have varying clock and memory speeds per varying model.

-ALL Power supply requirements are from the manufacturer directly, These are not my recommendation.

-ALL Max power consumption Wattage's listed are from it's Power connectors + motherboard power output. The value given is the combined Absolute max power draw and does NOT mean it will get to that figure even when under max load. 8-pin connectors can achieve 220W and 6-pin 110W, all modern power supplies can handle and output this amount, with the motherboard outputting 75W per PCI-E slot.

-ALL memory clocks are given as an effective value.

-Only cards longer than 300mm are given a drawback warning to check case dimensions, ALWAYS check to see that a card fits in your case before purchasing any card.

-MSI Gaming cards 'Core clock' values are given as the Gaming mode setting. MSI have OC and Silent mode varying clocks also.

-Average temperature/fan noise values taken is the halfway difference between the load and idle numbers presented.

Solution
It may be worth adding info about the new AMD CCC Omega drivers, e.g. the 280 and 280x do not support Virtual Super Resolution, and are the only r9 series cards that don't.
