Laptop - HP Pavilion dv2910tx
Windows 10 Tech Preview x64
3GB RAM 128MB Graphics
Intel Core 2 Duo T5750 @ 2.00GHz

OEM Hard drive - Fujitsu MHZ2320BH G2
8MB Cache 5400RPM SATA300
2.5"
0.4inch ~ 10 mm

Noob here. My laptop overheats a lot. Its temperature shoots from 21C to 63C on a regular use, 65C as I write and the max I have recorded is 84C too. Its fan is like ON forever and makes peculiar voices every time I switch it on. I have experienced very slow 'disk' speeds from Task manager too - in range of 10-20mbps max. Even after just 2-3 hours of Firefox/Internet, it hangs intermittently.

Going through this forum, I realized that maybe upgrading to a better hard drive would actually sort out these issues, So I would like to know what should I keep in mind while looking for a hard drive?

I happened to search on net and found a few HDDs -

Will this work? Also will the Seagate Momentus Thin 500GB HDD with 7mm work with this laptop too?

RAM will max out at 4GB, so I don't think adding 1GB more would be any substantial. Also 250GB is too less for my needs and 7500 bucks is way more than I want to spend. Won't a better HDD upgrade be enough?

Hi there fyodor0137,

Have you cleaned off the dust out of your laptop. My guess would be that the loud fan spinning is caused by overheating(which is cause by the poor airflow).
Regarding your drive, I would also say that it is an old and slow one(there may be some problems with it too). Upgrading it to a new one, will decrease the loading times of OS, games and programs. You can use some hard drive testing software in order to check its overall health.
Regarding the drive you have chosen, I would say that as long as it is 2.5'' and the height is the same, it should fit in and work fine.

Cheers,

I used Hard Disk sentinel program, and it says that your disk is Healthy and with estimated 1000 days of life remaining, but I would still like to upgrade my HDD for a larger storage, better performance.

Regarding the HGST HDD, I think it is the same 9.5 mm as mine OEM one, but Seagate one isn't, so as you say, it won't be suitable for my laptop, right?
Also, How vast a change I could expect with HDD upgrade? Should I also upgrade my processor from 2GHz to sth like 2.5GHz for much needed better performance. I just can't go and buy a new laptop altogether, don't have that much money.

Thank you for your reply.

My suggestion would be to take the HDD with similar dimensions as the one that you currently have.
As I already mentioned, you will experience noticeable shorter loading times. Though, as your current HDD is healthy, my guess would be that the performance issues you are facing are caused by something else. The easiest thing to do is to just clean the dust out and see whether the issue persists.
Also, what is the purpose of the laptop?(gaming, editing, etc). Based on this, you can decide whether you need better processor, RAM, or GPU.

I disagree with D_Know_D in that you will Not "experience noticeable shorter loading times." With your hardware, the only way to experience that would be adding an SSD. No platter spinning HDD is going to give you that experience. However, if you want to be certain the drive will perform better, make sure you compare the IOPS of each drive.
