I cant find anyway to open jpegs in windows 8.1 I have installed Irfan but that wont open them either - It just says unknown file format. They open OK on my other computer running windows 7 but I have purchased this new computer as my new job involves working with jpegs - as a picture editor!

I had the same problem with my new 8.1 laptop. Think 8.1 needs an app to be downloaded from Windows store: ??? So I solved it the old fashion way -
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to any jpeg. Right-click on the jpeg and select 'Open with' > Choose Default Program. Next choose your preferred program (with an .exe extension) to view/edit jpegs. OK and Bob's your uncle for all jpegs thereafter!

For pdfs, you need to first install Adobe Reader and after install, I think it auto selects itself as the default pdf reader. If it does not, use the right-click open with > choose default program method again.
With zip files, right-click on it > Extract All > hit Enter key once if not twice.
