I m getting an USB data card(dongle) for my internet needs. I use a desktop, so no built-in wireless modem to create a wifi hotspot. Is there a way I could setup a wifi using this card?

Solution

No, you cannot. WiFi and 3G/EV-DO are entirely different protocols that require entirely different hardware. I couldn't find a manual for that device, but unless it specifically includes a wireless module, you will need external hardware. Adding a wireless adapter to the PC would be the easiest solution, but since it requires it to be on, it might not be the most appropriate.

There are some wireless routers that...
I think the guy has a GSM USB modem and wants to share the connection wirelessly, but the desktop doesn't have a wireless adapter.

A GSM modem will not work as a wireless hotspot simply because they are entirely different protocols.

If that is the case, well, buy a wireless adapter. That really is the easiest way to achieve this.

You are probably correct in your interpretation of the OP's request. The "data card" didn't register as 3G/4G ...

Ok. I feel I was greatly lacking in details.
The data card they are giving me is a ZTE AC2791. Its a 3G USB data card. 14 mbps. EV-DO Rev B

I have a desktop with no Wifi/Wireless equipment of any sort. I m asking if I can use this data card to setup a Wifi. Preferably without having to keep my PC turned on 24/7 for it.

There are some wireless routers that support 3G connections through an USB modem such as yours, such as the TL-MR3020. It specifically supports your modem. Sells on amazon for 30 bucks.

Yes. I found out from someone that some WiFi routers have an auxillary 3G/4G usb port for when your Ethernet ADSL might be down. I will be looking into those. Thank you for your answers.
