Crazy problem. Multiple computers (Mac & PC) are experiencing this issue. I have Google Chrome on all of them and they're all synced. Every computer is getting new tabs opened on Chrome (I'm logged in on all of them). In some cases 20+ tabs when I come back to the computer after several hours.

I've ran Malwarebytes, Adaware, Adware, CCleaner, Anti-Virus on all of the computers. One computer was found to have a trojan (work computer) but it was removed via Malwarebytes. I've reset my password to a crazy difficult one and the problem persists.

The advert tabs will randomly pop up on their own on ALL computers. Not all at the same time mind you but throughout the day. It'll be the tough ones that cause you to have to kill the browser to get out of it.

Any ideas?

I installed AdBlock and it did not work; it happens both at work and at home. I subscribe to Webroot at home and they have clear not heard about it. I cna keep it under control by shutting down Chrome when I'm away from the computer, but it still happens even when I'm using hte app normally. I've seen the problem on IE as well. Almost no one seems to know about it! Is there anyone else with this problem?

I had the same problem, and I installed and ran numerous malware, adware and virus programs and could not solve the problem. Then I read about the problem being caused by a defective cookie. I went into Chrome, deleted all my cookies. It didn't work on the first pass. But when I restarted and deleted all cookies again, the problem of self opening tabs in Chrome went away.

I don't think you have to delete ALL cookies, but I did just to be sure.

this is one of the first links that comes up with a relevant search for this issue, after several tries to clean this bug and resetting chrome, uninstalling and reinstalling, clearing temporary files and all those things. I was still getting some tabs open randomly.

Quick fix after you've done all the other stuff to finalize the clean is to

1) Hit 'Win+R', type "taskschd.msc" to open up your task schedule
2) look for suspicious scheduled tasks.

Mine was a task for some kind of internet life dot org site. Hope this helps if anybody is stuck. suspicious tasks should stick out, but pay attention to the initial link your advert tabs are opening and look for something related.
