How will this build run Skyrim

That'll work excellently. Game like skyrim are quite un-optimized, and I believe (don't quote me on this) that 6 cores should help, plus if you add a decent CPU cooler like a Hyper 212 Evo, you can get a decent amount of performance from overclocking.

So you're saying skyrim won't be good on the fx 6300

And another question, I've read that the motherboard isn't too well. I'm wondering if you can get a decent over clock out of it when I put the CM hyper 212 evo on it. I hope the board is good for skyrim because I'm on a budget

No I'm saying if you want to mod, you'll need to work the cfg just like I did.

And I wouldn't know about the motherboard OC capabilities.

How would one work the cfg? How complicated is it? What is it?

If you are going to use an ENB and lots of texture mods then I would get something more powerful than an R9 280/GTX770. With 2x780TIs and K ENB I get 42 FPS average outdoors at 1080p, with 2xR9 290Xs I get 32 FPS, of course this is one of the most demanding ENBs out there. Also AMD processors benchmark lower FPS than Intel on Skyrim; as seen here: http://techreport.com/review/23750/amd-fx-8350-processor-reviewed/5, even i3s beat 8350s on this game.

Skyrim is poorly threaded. This would be better for Skyrim, and give you an upgrade path. AM3+ is dead.

You don't want a dual core these days. Games are starting to ultilise more and more cores. In that price bracket, I would get a FX 4350. That has the best price/perforamance of any gaming CPU. Yes AM3+ is now outdated, but the FX 4350 is very, very good.

AM3+ isn't dated, it is dead. AMD is abandoning the architecture it started with faildozer, and starting over. New chips won't be out till 2016. FX 4350 is a horrible CPU. It is barely better than a Phenom II X4 @ 4.0ghz. It is slower, clock for clock, than even a core 2 quad. The cost to overclock it enough to meet or beat and i3, you may as well just get an i5.

Yeah, but TBH, when does CPU performance matter too much in games, at least as much asGPU. I do hate it though when people go on about how the 6300 has 6 cores and so must be better than anything else in its price range. Unless you're running super intensive applications, streaming is pretty much the only reason for 8 cores.

FX 6300 competes directly with i3. It has to be overclocked, to at least FX 6350 speeds, to match/beat i3, though. I own an FX 8320, myself. Microcenter's $100 deal on them last year was impossible to pass up. :D Just this late in the game, it is clear that AM3+ is dead, and FM2+ is best left to HTPC and office systems. The lack of L3 cache hurts the FM2+ chips, gaming wise.

skyrim doesn't need to be ini hacked anymore to take advantage of higher core counts. it used to work, but its defunct now and now any havok/papyrus ini hacks can actually hurt performance. otherwise skyrim wants two cores moving as fast as possible, will use up to six additional cores for random low level crap.

otherwise, the fx6300+r9-280(7950) is plenty of horsepower for 1080p vanilla skyrim, though optimizing and cleaning vanilla skyrim will help, especially for modding. if you dont go too crazy with unnecessary 2k-4k textures, and you mod correctly, you shouldn't have any problems.

but the i3 would be ideal.
