Hello, recently I have bought parts for a new computer and it is has come to my attention that Microsoft no longer includes discs for Windows 8.1, just the product key.

How can I install an OS without a disc? Doesn't that seem absurd...?

I understand the OEM version includes a disc, which I may indeed purchase, but I want to build my computer now and was wondering two things:

1) When I purchase the OEM will it email the product key? (Windows 8.1)

2) On Microsofts website it says that you can download an ISO to a disc but it is Windows 7, not 8.1 I don't have a product key for Windows 7, it will be for 8.1... Will it allow me to install it so it can accept the product key for Windows 8.1? Please ask if you don't understand my question;
How do I install Windows 7 when I have a product key for Windows 8.1?

The OEM will come with a key on the packaging. If you buy it as a download then the will email you the key. An ISO is an image which you can use software which will uncompress the file to a DVD and then you install. I've never installed using USB so I'm not familiar with that. You will need a key for each OS you purchase a Windows 7 will not work for Windows 8.1.

If you want it on disk you can purchase the OEM disk with key from Newegg. www.newegg.com

If they provided you the wrong product ISO for the key you bought, contact customer service and get the right ISO. From there, put the ISO on a flash drive (make sure the flash drive is bootable) and use it to install windows 8.1 The installation is fairly simple, just read the prompts and provide the right information. Done this method twice now and it's fairly simple... Just make sure the flash drive is bootable or the whole process won't work. Also using a disc would be fine, but it will waste a disc.

Yes the product key typically comes in an email.
