I have a question about used motherboards and if I can use a new HDD with it.

Alright, So recently my computer crapped the bed because something hit the front of my computer and ruined my HDD. Now I'm wondering, if I go out and buy a new OS and HDD will I be able to install them with my used Motherboard.?? I bought the computer new pre built through Asus so I'm also wondering if maybe they have something on the MB that may prevent this from working.? Any input would be great. Thanks. :)

You may need to search for the drivers for your particular motherboard model and install them, but otherwise you can add a new hard drive and install whatever os you want (provided it's compatible with the mobo and drivers) - meaning pretty much any version of windows. Windows will at the very outside have default drivers that will allow the system to function until you get the correct specific drivers for your motherboard installed. Shouldn't matter whether it's win7 or win8/8.1.

Somewhere on your motherboard it should be printed on it what model number and what revision it is or version - might require a flashlight, look on the board itself between the various pci slots and things. That's the info you'll want when searching the asus site (provided it's an asus motherboard). Usually under the 'support' link on the manufacturers website.

When I mentioned compatibility I meant 'all' os's could include any number of versions of linux/unix which is a non issue for most users since most people use windows. It's a little more difficult finding things with linux supported drivers than for windows.
