Wireless devices losing Internet connection

I’m an IT person that is a jack of many things and master of none … kind of like my other skills in life.

In addition to working full time I support 10 area libraries. I have a Linksys wireless router at home. The library I’m writing about had a Linksys WRT54G 2.4 GHz router. Every once in a while it needed to be reset as patrons couldn’t connect to the Internet. Nothing unusual. It’s been rock solid.

Without and changes made to anything the router had to be reset every couple of days or even a couple times a day for patrons to connect to the Internet. So as a test I replaced that router with the exact same model router and the same thing happens. Replaced that router with Linksys WRT54G2 and the same thing happens. Both of these replacement routers were used. Library is convinced they need a brand new wireless router. So I have them get a brand new Netgear WNDR43000 802.11n Dual Band Gigabit router. It does the same thing and I have it setup with all default settings. This site has Comcast Internet and I have a lot of hardwired PCs on the network and none of them are having any problems. Other thing I’ve tried is replacing the cable from these wireless routers to the switch. Tried many different ports on the switch. Plugged the router right into the Comcast equipment. None of these things have made any difference. So I’m 99% sure it’s not cabling to the wireless router. I’ve recommended to all my libraries that they contact their ISP as most have cheaper faster plans. This library contacted Comcast and they got faster speeds at a cheaper price. Comcast came out and replaced their old equipment with new. I told the director to ask the techs about this problem and if they could provide the wireless equipment so it’s in their lap. Of course the director didn’t do any of these things as she only likes to sit all day and chat with friends and play games on the Internet. Took her a year to contact Comcast to get better service – this is a whole ‘nother story.

I’ve never seen it fail while at the library and it is about an hour way that makes this challenging. The workers say the light on all 4 wireless routers indicates it has an Internet connection. Maybe Comcast is limiting the number of connections to the Internet? Any suggestions? Thanks!!
