I have a Sony Vaio laptop that's a little over 2 years old. It was stuck on Windows update so I decided to turn off my computer. Now I cannot get past the Automatic repair screen. It always says that it failed.

I have tried to do a system restore and refreshing my pc. Both ran, but failed in the end. I cannot get any version of safe mode to run.

I have checked the log file named SrtTrail and the last entry mentions corrupt registry files.

I have tried src /scannow and it appeared to find and repair a few things. However, restarting my computer showed that the issue was not resolved. I am currently trying chkdsk /r C:

I did not make recovery disks nor do I have an external backup. If at all possible, I'd like to recover my files.

I am not oppressed to factory reseting my laptop or installing Linux. However, that would be my last option after exhausting all other possible solutions.

You could create a new partition on the existing drive, install windows, boot into that partition, pull the files you need from the other partition to the new one, then format the old partition and expand the new one.

You could remove the HDD and plug it into another computer to recover the files, as for the loop I had a similar problem, I just formatted it and that fixed it. If you don't have another PC to plug the drive into I believe a PC shop will be able to recover files for you.
