Recently someone I know recommended me a build that contains a Core i5 4440, a Z87 motherboard, an R9 270x, 500w power supply, 2x4 GB RAM etc. I thought of another build which is similar but has a B85M motherboard and a GTX 970 but he said it wasn't good because I had a MicroATX motherboard which would allegedly decrease performance and wouldn't last. He also said that the R9 270x can already max out any game (not true, look at AC: Unity for example) and the GTX 970 would be a waste. So which is better? I think mine is, but still want an opinion from you guys.

Not True, He has no clue, motherboard being micro will have no decrease in performance, unless its a low end board, also gtx 970 is waaay better and consumes less power, go with your build

No a micro ATX board will not decrease performance. That is a myth.
A gtx970 will far out perform the r9 270x by basically 100%.
At 1080p, a 270x will not really max any modern AAA game, but a 970 will max most games.

Its not even a question. The 970 is hands down better. That is just the answer.

everyone here should be agreeing with tiny. the 970 is a high end card whereas the R9 270x is almost just a midrange card. if you check benchmarks with these cards, you will see that there is a huge gap between the two. so much so that there is no doubt in anyones mind.

The Z87 board has more features than a B series board but it wont like last longer or anything. You are using a locked i5, so a z87 board is really pointless anyway.

His build has a few advantages. Depending on his motherboard he can CF/SLI, but your build cannot. That;s about it.

True but all he has to do is buy a new PSU, you would have to buy a new motherboard and likely reinstall Windows.
The gtx970 is ALOT more powerful than the 270x, that is not even a debate. There is alot of merit to not getting a cheap motherboard though.

For a basic board yeah, but it will certainly not have all the features of an H97 motherboard (recommend for HAswell i5s for non-overclocking builds).

For the PSU get an XFX550. Best value for money PSU there is.
The case only really matters for personal preference. I recommend a Corsair 300r. I have one and it is a VERY good case for the money.
