I am in process of building a new machine.
My old setup has an SSD which is its boot drive - which i would like to strip out, format and put in my new system as a boot drive. The old rig would still be a functioning setup, but i can make one of the mechanical HDD's in there it's boot drive. All the software is currently installed on the SSD also, so will i need to re install all the programmes on the newly appointed drive? Or can this drive be 'cloned' (a term I've heard but don't really understand) to a HDD?

What would be the best way to make this transition as seamless as possible?

Solution
Sure, you can clone (or "image) off a drive to a new one. You won't have to reinstall anything at all.

Check out Acronis TrueImage (acronis.com) as an example of one of the more popular disk imaging utilities. You can also get more info there on how the cloning process works.
