The h97 boards are being reported as very good overclockers on a budget.

You have to remember that vast majority of people that feel compelled to leave a review, have had a negative experience. Either got a lemon (which happens with all vendors products), or fell victim to their own stupidity (shouldn't be building their own in the first place).

Most people that have no problems whatsoever, don't feel the need to bother taking the time to leave a positive review. They just enjoy the product and move on.

The thing to look out for in reviews are when you see a slew of reported problems all stating the same thing. An example would be something like 20 reviews in a row all saying their 3rd sata port doesn't work, or pages of people...

All products will have bad reviews. Mostly due to the buyers own incompetence. (Can't fathom how to properly apply for a mail-in-rebate, or crushed their socket pins then blame the motherboard, or can't install a cpu cooler properly, or kill their motherboard by scratching and dragging it on the case stand-offs during installation. I could go on and on.

Oh, another good thing to remember is most all vendors (asus, asrock, gigabyte, msi. etc...) are just that. Vendors. They peddle slightly different versions built by one company. Basically all their products are built by foxconn in the same building with slightly different designs, accessories, paint jobs, stickers and packaging. Don't get hung up on vendor brands.

There are many good ones.... as far as most reliable goes...AMD compatible almost anything. They are not the best, most flashy, or most effective, but i have never heard of one breaking down to the point you could not repair it.
for my choice i would say
Asus M5A 78 L
