Hi I frequently get BSOD's. Windows 8.1, 8GB memory, processor AMD A8-6600K APU with Radeon HD Graphics, 3.9 GHz. System drive is an SSD drive (C: ); it also has a regular platter disk (E: ).

Details:
* Usually it reports UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP, but sometimes various other, e.g. BAD_POOL_CALLER, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.
* Blue Screen Viewer invariably reports ntoskrnl.exe+14f1a0 as the crash address.
* Memory seems OK, Memtest86+ has ran for days without issues.
* I have run the Windows driver verifier, it reported an issue on the AMD driver (hash value does not match file), I have ran a repair tool for it and now the driver verifier reports no issues anymore.

Any help would be highly appreciated!

Even though windows driver verifier reports no issues still good thing to update drivers .

command prompt type; sfc /scannow type; Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth type; chkdsk /f .

Try to remove bloatware from your system. And temporarily uninstall AV .

task manager > start-up > disable unnecessary items .

Is there anything that triggers these bsods or is it random?

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for your answer, Just to be sure about Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (and sfc /scannow), do these apply any irreversible actions? E.g. remove installed software? I wouldn't like to have my programs (Thunderbird, Firefox, MS Office, etc.) being uninstalled...
Chkdsk does not report any issues.
Temporary disabling AV (Avast Internet Security in my case) seems a bit tricky nowadays...? (unless I pull my network connection of course...)? Personally I would not even be online for a second without AV...

I have created accounts for myself and each of my kids (3). I have enabled Parental Control on the children's accounts. On my own account it happens infrequently, but on my children's accounts much much more frequent (one evening even 6 times in an hour!!).
Disabling parental control very much reduces the BSOD's, but then they still happen, about at the same pace as with my account (once in 2-3 days).

Hi Paul, You mean the dump files that you view with Blue Screen Viewer? I will see if I can locate them and post them, I will try to get it done tomorrow night.

sfc /scannow does not report any issues:
"C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth gave the output as below.
Does this indicate that actually something was corrupt?

Code:
C:\Windows\system32>Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
Version: 6.3.9600.17031
Image Version: 6.3.9600.17031
[==========================100.0%==========================]
The restore operation completed successfully. The component store corruption was repaired.
The operation completed successfully.
C:\Windows\system32>

Hi Paul, thanks a lot for spending your time in analyzing the logs!
Video drivers might well be a source of these troubles, the BSOD's come more or less random, but seemingly more often when the video output is changing quickly and relatively much memory is in use, so I can imagine that.

I do not understand why I should uninstall Avast. What would be the relationship between a crashing video driver and Avast? Do you recommend an other virus scanner / firewall? You definitely don't advise to work without AV at all I suppose?

Thanks in advance for your answer!

Hi Paul,
I am afraid you are right... I have uninstalled Avast, and not a single BSOD anymore !!
Thanks a lot!

Too bad for a paid product! And a pity too, as I really like it's features, speed and usability...
But now with only Windows AV... Known as one of the worst in the market...

Any suggestions on good anti virus software that does not crash Windows 8?
What about Norton, Kapersky, McAfee, F-Secure, BitDefender, Panda? Other?

I tend to BitDefender, anyone negative experiences with it - don't want to spoil my money twice ;-)
