I have two hard drives, can I temporarily use one then switch to the other later on?

So I just built a PC, but due to Windows activation being down, I can't install my Windows 8.1 onto it. I have another hard drive with Windows 7 on it, but I really want to use my new HDD and windows 8.1. If I install my old HDD onto it just to use for the day (they said it'd take 24 hrs) will I just be able to take it out and replace it with my old HDD with no problems? And if I install drivers onto the windows 7 HDD, will they still be there when I install my windows 8.1 HDD?

Solution
When installing win8.1 do not plug the system into the internet. So long as you enter in a valid key the OS will install just fine without going through the activation process. You will have some 30 days to plug it into the internet and register with MS, plenty of time for them to get their activation servers up and running again (it is typically only down for a few minutes).

You can try using a HDD from another computer... but Windows is pretty tied to your motherboard, so unless you are running very similar chipsets it will typically fail on boot. Generally not worth trying in my experience, but it sometimes works and you will have a few days to set things right before MS gets mad at you.

It's a fresh PC that I literally JUST built, so no internet connection yet. And the Key is valid, because I literally just used it to download it onto a USB from my laptop. So I found it odd that I couldn't use the product key I had just used 10 min prior to install onto a USB. So when I contacted Windows they told me somethings down and that I can't activate windows with a key right now and it should be solved within 24 hrs.
