So i'm planning on doing a fairly extensive overhaul of my gaming rig now that i'm coming into some better cash flow. As i mentioned it's mostly a gaming pc but i do plan on doing recordings for youtube and some 3d modelling work when i go back to college and whatnot.

My setup was a PC i bought off ibuypower (yes i know, stupid) it had

I5-3570K CPU

GTX660 Gigabyte windforce GPU

8GB generic brand 1333 DDR3 RAM

Asrock H61M-HVS cheapo mobo (no cpu overclocking, no sli etc..)

Allied 500w PSU

Western Digital 7200rpm 500gb HDD

DVD+- RW/CD combo drive

NZXT Source 210 Mid Tower Case

I recently upgraded to a Gigabyte G1 Gaming GTX970 graphics card, and an XFX TS 550watt PSU, but i'm now looking to pluck out the rest of the subpar parts so as not to bottleneck and for futureproofing for when i start 1440p and 4k gaming instead of 1080 like i'm doing now.

My plan was to maybe sell my old CPU, RAM, Mobo etc.. and

1st: Replace the Case with a large Mid tower or maybe even a Full tower case

2nd: Get a new Z97 or X99 mobo to support CPU overclocking and SLI

3rd: Get a new six core I7 CPU to replace the I5 3570K, from what i've seen the I7 5820K is the cheapest?

4th: Get a 2nd Gigabyte GTX970 for SLI (and i'd most likely need a 750-850w psu as well)

5th: Get a decent but not too expensive Liquid CPU cooler to replace stock heatsink on the new CPU

and lastly if i can afford, change some smaller things, such as an SSD for important files and game data, some decent RAM, some LED lighting for fans and the case (the GPU has blue lighting on it so that unfortunately limits my color options somewhat) then finally get a 1440p or 4k monitor to reap the benefits of all this work.

So i'm wondering what you're opinions are on this? Will an I7 6 core like the 5820K work with a z97? It seems that i might have to go X99 for it. And would i be forced to get DDR4 RAM with an X99 in that case?

Any reccomendations on a good case, mobo, psu, RAM, SSD etc.. to get would be appreciated.

you could make a list of what you want and set price alerts on newegg and camelcamelcamel.com ( for amazon). If you find a good price just buy it. GTX 970 SLI should be good for 4K gaming. you could look ar various websites that have reviewed 970 SLI performance @4K resolutions.

the better option would be to go with a i5-4690K or i7-4770k, the i7-5820k is a lga 2011-v3 part (not compatible with Z97 boards), uses expensive ddr4 RAM. If you are mostly into gaming go with the i5, if you do lot of video capture and editing go with the i7 4770K (Gaming wise they provide little benefit). Invest in a good PSU, it will last you through many upgrades ( you get what you paid for in PSU), some good brands are Seasonic, Corsair Hx,AX series, Rosewill CApstone/tachyon, Silversotne Strider, some Thermaltake models ( not sure on what models).

Yeah i was kind of wondering about that. The PC is going to be mostly gaming, but i am going to be doing some recording and uploading to youtube and possibly some 3d design and coding for school stuff so i would probably want an I7 with hyperthreading.

How much of a difference as far as video editing and whatnot would a 5820K make vs a 4770K or 4790K? (the 4ghz 4790k is the same price as the 3.5ghz 4770k so i might as well go for 4790 wouldn't you think?) Would the 4770k give much benefit in gaming over an I5 3570K?

And what would you reccomend as far as a good case and motherboard to handle SLI gtx970's? even with 3 fans on the gpu i'm worried that them being right on top of each other might cause a problem so i thought a case with good airflow and room would be a good idea especially if i don't go with watercooled GPU.

Your 3570K is a fine processor for gaming, but i think your motherboard is probably the bottleneck in your current setup. An OC'ed 3570K paired with 970 is prob good for 1440p gaming.

Gaming wise the i5-4690K =i7-4770K=i7-4790k=5820K. YOu might get a few % frames extra with the 5820K CPU's. YOu can use the CPU test bench @ anandtech to see the comparison between different CPU's http://www.anandtech.com/bench/product/1260?vs=1320. The i7-5820K/5930K is pretty decent for video encoding, but you have to decide whether the added cost is good enough for the added frame rates.

I would recommend this GTX 970 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-4gb-gddr5-pci-express-3-0-graphics-card-silver-black/9855169.p?id=1219441201895&skuId=9855169. Right now only BB carries it and they are very expensive $50 over other 970's, but they have the added benefit of pushing the air out of your case.

For cases I like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139024. Little expensive, but has lots of room to work with, also has space for multiple RADS, if you go WC in the future.

Here is an example build with 970 SLI:

Well i already own a Gigabyte G1 super overclock GTX970 so i would want to get another of the same kind at least for appearance sake, and they're technically the most powerful 970 out there with it's 1,329mhz base clock and 8 pin/6 pin configuration allows more wattage for better overclocking etc..

And if all i was doing CPU wise is going from the I5 3570K i already have to a 4670K then it wouldn't make much of a difference would it? That's why i was thinking of getting an I7, since going from one I5 to another isn't much of a jump.

This is the list of things i was thinking of getting (updated based on your advice on the 5820 not being worth it)

Bitfenix Collosus Venom Full-tower case $139

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811345008

Gigabyte Z97 Gaming 5 Mobo $159 (it appears to support everything i need as far as i can tell; overclocking, SLI etc..)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128709

Intel I7-4790K 4.0ghz CPU $331

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117369

Corsair H75 Liquid CPU cooler $74.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181058

ADATA premium pro 256gb SSD drive $99 (although that 512gb on pcpartpicker you linked for $199 looks interesting)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211853

Corsair Dominator Platinum 8gb 1866 RAM (2x4gb) $129

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233284

XFX PRO 850watt PSU $149

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207028

This all comes to a total of $1,086, if i added in the 2nd Gigabyte GTX970 (below) the total would be $1,455

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125684&cm_re=gtx970_g1-_-14-125-684-_-Product

But if what your saying is right, then i won't need to replace the CPU necessarily right now, so i might just drop the CPU and get just the mobo, psu, RAM etc.. and the 2nd graphics card instead, and use that corsair liquid cooler on the 3570K i have since i'll finally be able to overclock it on this MOBO.

Do you think that a setup with I5-3570K, that Gigabyte Motherboard, 850w PSU, two GTX970's in SLI, 8gb of that good dominator platinum RAM , a good case like the bitfenix etc.. would be good enough for 4k gaming? If i can get away with not changing my CPU then i could just get a good 4k monitor like the Acer that supports G-sync that is around $600 iirc.

What do you think of that list of parts? I figure i could pay for it in installments over several months as i get more money. Buy the Case and Motherboard first ($300) then a few months later get the Graphic card and new PSU ($500) then a few months after that get the CPU and watercooler/radiator ($400) and then whenever i can afford after that, get the SSD and new RAM ($200-300) And eventually get the monitor like a year from now or something

I imagine i could even skip the "unnecessary" stuff for now, just getting the case, motherboard, PSU, and 2nd GPU; just not overclocking the CPU so i won't need watercooler, and using my current HDD and RAM etc.. getting a 4k monitor ($550) instead of a cpu/ssd/ram etc..

the i5-3570k is not compatible with the z97 Mobo, since you are buying a new Mobo, you might as well buy the i7-4790K.

The corsair dominator platinum is overpriced RAM, you can get the corsair vengance ( same specs http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233170) or get a GSKill RAM for much cheaper. Don't go anything more than 1866 on DDR3, more expensive RAM, diminishing results.
The Mobo looks nice!!!
The PSU looks good too, but keep an eye out fir the newegg flash sales, sometimes they have the PSU for cheap.

I am not sure about the ADATA SSD, if you are looking at a 256G SSD, go with crucial or Samsung. (i think the 840 evo comes with a free FC4 coupon).

When picking the case make sure that you can fit the graphics card, your graphics card is 330 mm long.

For the 4k Monitors take a wait and see approach, AMD has their Fresync stuff going on, similar to gsync. we have to see which one wins out, before investing on a monitor.

Really? you gotta be kidding me, that's crazy, the ivy bridge's like 3570K aren't that old, so why wouldn't a z97 support it? idk, just doesn't make sense to me. That ups the price on me then, although i suppose i could sell my 3570K, but i don't have the box or anything since i bought the PC pre-built. I suppose i could just take out the graphics card and PSU, leaving the CPU, RAM, mobo etc.. in the case and sell it as a single unit on ebay or something.

I was thinking the same thing about the corsair dominator RAM, but some people were saying it was worth it for the platinums higher CL rate and such, and i'm trying to color code things as well. I'm kind of thinking of getting the Corsair 760t case rather than that Bitfenix collosus venom, only problem is that it's black and white with white fans etc. so i'm wondering how it would look with my insane color scheme i have going.

Red led on my Microsoft Sidewinder X4 keyboard, Blue LED on my Razer Abyssus mouse, Green LED on my Razer Kraken 7.1 surround headset, and Blue LED on my Gigabyte G1 GTX970 GPU, the gigabyte g1 mobo is mostly red and black as well, so i would have white, black, and red for solid color on the actual pieces; and green/blue/red on my LED's (although so far the only red/green is on stuff OUTSIDE the pc such as mouse/kb/headphone, but i would still have red, black, white, and blue in my case so i wonder what RAM would look good with that chimera color scheme...

Well, that sucks. Oh well, i guess i could always just continue using my current PC to play for now, and just buy things bit by bit as i get money (for example: Month 1 = Buy Case and motherboard, Month 2 = Buy I7 4790K and RAM and i could use the onboard HD4600 gpu to play mild games, Month 3 = Buy Corsair H75 or H80 liquid cooler, power supply and SSD, then swap my GPU into the new case then sell my old one to someone wanting a gaming pc; all they'd need is a GPU, and on the next month start saving up for a 2nd GTX970 for SLI)

And yeah i noticed they had that black/red one, and it definitely matches the color better, although i do like the white one's look better. Either way it's a good looking case, i LOVE that huge window on it :)

How well do you think two Gigabyte G1 GTX970's in SLI with the liquid cooled I7 4790K would do at 4k gaming? Since i already own a 970 i would imagine it'd be better to go for two way SLI 970's rather than attempting to go with GTX980 or SLI 980's.
