Should I be concerned about these CPU Temps?

I downloaded "RealTemp" recently to check on my CPU temps and the results were higher than expected. Accord to RealTemp my PC idles between 45c and 50c and when I did the Prime95 stress test with it the temps for one of the cores reached 87 halfway through the test (51%) so I stopped the test.

My setup

DX58SO intel motherboard
i7 965 extreme
660 GTX GPU
6GB ram
Intel SSD 160 GB
600 GB HDD

You might as well buy a cheap aftermarker cooler like 212 EVO since your taking it off, it comes with thermal paste as well just make sure to google if "your case" can fit a 212 evo. Stock thermal paste is pretty shit/not fully covered across the CPU

Yes everything is bone stock.

Is there anything I can besides removing it and reapplying thermal paste? And is it possible something else could be causing the extra heat? The case has good ventilation through back of case with fan and top of case with another fan too.

Yeah that's too high max temp it should reach is 72-74 under full load anything higher will slowly damage the CPU and make die off pretty fast depending how hot it is. I recommend buying an after market CPU cooler as it sounds like you have a stock CPU cooler. If you don't I'd re apply thermal paste but google how to remove the old thermal paste.

It was built by local couple years ago and he applied thermal paste.

No cooler everything is stock. Never overclocked.

Not sure what voltage is set too I've never messed with it and I recently got a new PSU (corsair tx 650w) I just installed it today.

Do I need to adjust the PSU settings?

I've never removed a heatsink or processor before kinda paranoid about it.

CPU-Z says the core voltage is 1.031 at idle. Isn't that low?

Thats normal, and lower voltage reduces temp.

It sounds like you just need to clean off the old paste and apply new. Theres tons of youtube guide videos to follow, its very easy.

Okay I guess I'm going to buy some paste and take a crack at it a-sap.

As for the new PSU I installed today is there anything I need to set or adjust?

All I did was connect it and turn the pc on. I have no idea if the settings in bios are what they should be.
