Hi, I'm new here so forgive me if I'm duplicate posting.

I have an Acer Aspire 5742z-4586 and I recently upgraded the ram to 8GB and upgraded to an SSD. I also purchased an Intel i7 740qm processor, which is supposed to be compatible with the HM55 chipset. However after i changed it and rebooted, i got a black screen for about 15-20 seconds then it would reboot. Switched back to the Pentium P6100, boots normally.

Any recommendations?

Additional info:
Laptop: Acer Aspire 5742z-4586
OS: Windows 8.1
Ram: 8 GB Crucial
HDD:Samsung 850 Pro SSD

Anything i missed, let me know.

Thanks

Just because the chipset should support the new processor does not mean that the BIOS on your board does.
Check with Acer about an available BIOS update that will work for your processor, I am not too optimistic. Prebuilds are limited with what you can do for upgrades, they don't want you upgrading, they want you to buy a new PC from them.
