The important part of my original post seems to have been lost in transmition, so here it is:

I use 3 programs -- 2 windows, 1 from a genealogical society -- that work wonderfully well in their XP versions. Their Windows 7 versions are rather poor. So, can I add Windows XP to my new HP 1 GB desktop, the Partition 1 (Disk C:) of which has 918 GB of space of which 740 GB (81%) is currently free. If so, how should I go about installing it?

I wonder if it would be possible to install XP on an external harddrive, and only plug it in to the computer when I need to run XP, which might be about 25-30% of the time?

You can certainly setup a dual boot XP/Windows 7 system. Several guides are available to assist you setting up such a configuration.

A search via Google yields multiple such guides: https://www.google.com/search?q=setup+dual+boot+xp+and+windows+7&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

You usually can't install an OS to an external drive and boot directly to it. This is not a good course of action.

Have you tried running the applications in XP mode from your Win 7 system?

Hi COLGeek,

Thanks. I'll certainly try the Google guides.

I've never heard of the XP mode in my Win 7 system, so I'd appreciate any guidance you can give.

Regards

Unfortunately, the Windows website states: "Using Windows XP Mode, you can run programs that were designed for Windows XP on computers running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions". My desktop is Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP 1, and apparently cannot run Windows XP Mode.

Is there anything else you can think of. For example, can I upgrade to Windows 7 Professional? Incidentally, the website states that Windows XP Mode will not run on Windows 8 computers.
