Hey there, thrissurkaran!

Well, it's not really recommended to play games from external hard drives. They are supposed to be used as an extra storage solutions for your data or as a backup storage.
It's possible to run smoothly only with less demanding games but most likely your PC restarts because of the slow, low power and low spin speed of the drive. Games are demanding applications and they are not supposed to be run off of external HDDs.
It's no surprise that you do not have any issues playing from your PC. External HDDs don't work as fast as internal drives, due to the different connections resulting in the write/read speed limit.
I'd simply use the external as a backup storage for my data and run the games of the PC, because this might damage the WD My Passport.

Hope I helped!

hi supersoph wd,

thanks for the reply....but I am not playing games from hd....just films..even when playing a film from pc when hd is plugged it restarts...please help....

Hi again,

This must be really annoying, I'm sorry to hear about that. :(
Do you have USB boot enabled in the BIOS? The system tends to restart when an USB device is plugged in and it's set in the boot priority.
Make sure you disable the the Legacy USB support.
Also have you tried the external on a different computer or with a different USB cable? I'd suggest to do so and see how it will react.
Another thing that comes to mind that might help is installing the WD SES driver: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=hp4zVt

Keep me posted! Hope this helped! :)

Hi again, thrissurkaran!

It's very unfortunate that you have such an unpleasant experience with the WD My Passport Ultra. :(
The only thing left to do in order to fix the issue is to get in touch with our tech support and let them know about it.
Check if your external HDD is still under warranty here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=KeFhLa
If it is, you should be able to RMA the drive: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=vXqJD1
You should be able to get a replacement if it is still in warranty.
The contacts: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=EFeRfs

Hope this helped. Good luck!

But when i tried to play with another laptop there was no problem with hd...my pc has usb2.0 while hd id 3.0 & compatable with 2.0 ...is this an issue? I don't want to replace it...:(

I see. Okay, in this case, you could try to re-format the WD My Passport and see if that would help.
You just need to backup all the data from it to your laptop, afterwards just format it in Disk management.
Here's a tutorial: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=4WZAQh
Then copy back all your data to the external again and try it on your PC.
If this doesn't resolve the issue, I guess the problem is with the USB ports on your PC.

Keep me posted!
