the description pretty much says it all. but i will add that in the disk management i did a scan for disks and nothing came up.so i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong.

Hey Jesscoth77. It doesn't get quite clear if this is a new HDD or it was previously installed and just starting having this issue? I'd suggest that first you try to isolate the problem by trying the drive with another computer to see if it works fine there. If it's detected, download the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and test the drive with it to see what's the situation. This could be due to a faulty SATA connection on your laptop as well. Another thing which you could do if you determine that both the drive and the SATA cable are OK, is to update your BIOS to the latest version to see if this fixes the issue.

Hope that helps.

its is used. i actually took it out of a dvr. its a 500 GB from seagate. I do not have another pc to try it on. I did update the BIOS and changed the setting to activate the port, that's how i got to this point of it showing in the BIOS. I will try the manufacturer's tool if there is one to see if that works. if you have any more advice I can use all the help I can get lol.

They do have a diagnostic tool, you can find it on the official website. Other than that I've heard of similar problems with drives after being used in a dvr, which might be just a coincidence. See if the diagnostic tool recognizes the drive and share the results. If you don't have another PC available where you can try the drive (although that would be helpful to see what happens in this case), you could try connecting it externally to your laptop with a SATA to USB cable to see if the same thing happens. You could try and reformat it to see if that fixes the problem (if it's recognized when connected externally), just note that this will delete your data.

i found the tool and it still don't recognize the drive. my next step is to change it to and external drive and see if that makes a difference. if it still don't read it i guess the drive is bad.
