Hi. I'm getting ready for my first build. Please point me in the right direction if this is the wrong place for this question. I am NOT planning to overclock and need advice on a motherboard for the amd 8350. I've looked at the Asus M5A97 R2.0 and the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3. Budget for this is $150. Thanks for the help.

I know you aren't overclocking but this is a very solid board that has enough room for expansion and has good features. Also, this board has the suitable power phase design to be able to properly run the 8350 at maximum performance.

I guess i figured the M5A97 was cheaper but I want better performance too. I'm also trying to find a balance between spending less for the motherboard to put more into graphics. Thanks.

I didn't consider ASRock because someone told me they weren't very good. But this one has good reviews and I like the aesthetics. What do you think about a cheaper motherboard for better graphics?

I would go MSI 970 GAMING,best 970 Tier One-Class A board. And support SLI and CF,6+2 power phase, best gaming series quality you should go.

Motherboard tier list: 970 chipset

(Tier One-Class A: Very High quality. Great boards for OCing, have optional SLI capability but more importantly can OC FX 8 well, if you have to get a 970 chipset board, these will be your top choice. High quality, and no overheating issues.)

I would get board with 990fx chip in it just for future expansion and possible overclock. 990 chip provides crossfire in x16 x16 mode 970 only in x16 8x which is poor performance in crossfire and 990 supports better oc. Anything that has 990 or 990fx in it is good. Stay away from Msi. I would stick with asus or asrock. I hope that helps.

Just a bias OP,x16 and x8 have a similar performance.

And I would go msi, they have good QC,same RMA rate as ASUS and use better high quality component .

MSI currently has no such issues, a couple of their boards, from AMD platform, were (rightly) critized of having overheating VRMs and DOA memory slots. Currently MSI has the same RMA rate as Asus, and they infact use high quality components, such rumours are biased and one should not be put off by it. MSI is as good as other brands, if not better.

By the way msi gaming series use very high quality components that we all know that.

PIEapple, the computer I'm using now is very old (bought it in '08) and it has an MSI board in it that's still going strong. I don't mind MSI but I have been seeing some bad reviews on them. I'd rather go with the 990 or 990FX because my kids play a lot of games and they are getting into making and editing videos for school assignments. I don't want to spend too much, but I want what I get to last. I really appreciate all this help.
