This is my father's computer. It's a Dell Studio XPS 8000, Intel Core i5 (8 MB cache), 8GB DDR3 SDRAM, 1024MB nVidia GeForce GT220, 1TB Serial ATA II Hard Drive, integrated 7.1 channel audio.

Sometimes the cursor freezes shortly after boot-up, or the computer reboots itself, with the option of starting Windows normally or in safe mode.

He has Norton 360, Adobe Reader XI, Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, RealPlayer Cloud, flash player, Cyberlink Power DVD 8.3 playback, etc. He mostly browses the web or uses Microsoft Office; nothing too demanding.

He ran the built-in diagnostics (pre-POST, I think, but I didn't see him do it) that tested the RAM, HD, etc, and supposedly no problems found. He also ran Norton and supposedly found no viruses, etc...

I opened the case and blew out the dust -- it wasn't super dusty, but there was some -- thinking that maybe the CPU was overheating. That didn't help.

There have been no hardware changes. He runs Windows Update.

Any suggestions on how to further troubleshoot?

Thanks!

Solution
Do a malware scan (malwarebytes anti-malware). Do a FULL scan, then when its done download Spybot search and destroy and do a full scan with that. If it's prompting for a safe mode boot after it shuts down it could be a power supply issue. The machine could suddenly be losing power, and you usually get that prompt after an abrupt shut-down.

If the scans show nothing it could definitely be the power supply.
