That's not a simple one or the other question. a 290x is slightly more powerful, however the 780 still might out perform it in some games. The 290x is cheaper but runs hot as all hell and sucks up a load of power. Like I said, you should look at the 970, faster then the 780, cheaper, and uses very little power while running cool. They are all 3 great cards, personally I'd go 970>290x>780. People may disagree with me, it all comes down to preference, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? what are the rest of your systems specs? why do you want the 780 instead of the newer 970 or 980?

The R9 290X is better. The architecture between the two cards are different so they are not directly comparable spec for spec. All I can really say is that the R9 290X is better because it does better in the gaming benchmarks and that AMD has mantle which gives them the edge in some games.

To add to this, if you are gaming above 1080p, the 290x will also perform much better then the 780.
