Hey guys just looking for a more up to date thought on what would be the best graphics card for a compaq 8000?

My Computer:

HP Compaq 8000 Elite SFF
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3 ghz
6 GB RAM
240 W Max

Solution
You will need to update the PSU - something like a 450W - 550W to get to better GPUs to play modern games. Entry level would be similar to the Nvidia 750ti (about $140) with a PSU around $50-$75.
It's really hard to spot, but buried in the specs of those HP SFF system is a little-noticed note that the board supports a max of 35W PCIe devices. It caught me out as I picked up an ex-lease one hoping to chuck a half-height 750ti in there for an entry level gaming for a friend.

There are no 'gaming' cards that slip in under 35W, so you either need to use something like a the half-height GTX 750(/ti) that I was looking at, and accept that you'll be out of spec and it may not work (worst case damaging components... though I'd be disappointed if HP shipped PSU that catastrophically failed without over-current protection). Despite them being a "240W" PSU, if memory serves me correctly there's only 14A on the 12V rail.

OR... you get yourself different base hardware
OR... well... maybe you live with a ultra low end card. Might manage something like league of legends, but any real gaming I think will be out of the question.

Sorry, probably not the sort of post you were hoping for.

I don't believe you can upgrade the PSU in those HP SFF systems. Please correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause I'd love to know!

In my experience (and I've used a few) they're a custom size and shape so they lift up (on a pivot). They've got stepped back too if I recall correctly.

Unfortunately also the motherboards are a custom format so you can't easily install them in a different case.

As I understand it (and, as I said above I'm happy to be shown otherwise!), your upgrade options are extremely restricted on those HP Elite SFF machines.

Oops. Didnt see it had a 35 watt limit on the pci e slot. Are you positive that is the case? The gt 730 has a 38 watt tdp. Perhaps it would work. Its not a bad little card. It will play games at low-med settings. Obviously not crysis or anything but games like wow and world of tanks. Certainly a huge improvement over intel gma 4500 super turd graphics.
