I am looking to upgrade my current build - 440 Watt Cooler Master Elite PSU, Fx 6100 cpu, gigabyte 970a-ds3 mobo, 8 gig ram system, GTX 550 Ti (evga) to a GTX 760 (evga) . My concern is do I have enough power to run it?

Solution

Im not recommending him to get one, I'm saying a 450w one could run it so he will definitely be fine with 500w. The corsair 450 is gold rated and I believe has the connectors but probably more expensive than a bronze 500w.

I agree with airplanegeek. Especially if you have a notable number of peripherals, fans, hard drives, etc. connected, 440W is scary close for a GTX 760. It's rated max power usage is 150W. The rest of your system could be estimated to use about 200-250W at full load. Especially for lower wattage and less regarded power supplies, it's not good to very near the max rating. 400/440W can still be dangerous if it's long and sustained. Aside from the occasional power usage spike, you don't want to use more than 70-75% of your PSU's rated capacity regularly. If you want better performance, you have two options:

1) Get a GTX 750 Ti and keep your PSU
The 750 Ti uses only 60W because of it's unique power-efficient Maxwell architecture. It was the first to use Maxwell and is also related to the new GTX 970 and 980 which both use about 150W themselves (where the space they occupy has cards that typically use 250-300W) The 750 Ti is faster, better, and noticeably stronger than your 550 Ti. It's the cheapest option, but it still might not provide as much of a boost vs your old setup as you are looking for.

2) Get a better PSU and widen your horizons.
If you get a (quality) PSU that can handle at least 600W, you can support some very good cards like the 760 you mentioned. But if you ask me, the 760 is a little behind in regards to what it offers for its price (~$180, I presume?). The R9 270X offers comparable or even a little better performance for ~$160 and the R9 280 at ~$200 bests it by a wide margin. If you have money to spare, the GTX 970 (~$330) would pair nicely with a 600W PSU.

The question is then, what PSU would you reccomend?
