I can't use more than 1 device at a time on all my ethernet switches.

I am trying to make a bitcoin miner in my basement where the modem is. The modem only has one ethernet port so I can't put both my miner and ethernet to upstairs router at the same time. That's when I used a gigabit switch. I've used this before and it will work, but with the miner and the long ethernet cable to the router and the miner just won't work properly. If I use the router-cable first, then it'll just only run the router and the not the miner even though both activity lights are on and vice-versa. I also tried it on 2 other of my switches but it still has the same result.

Is there a way to fix this?

Solution
You have to connect them in this order:
Modem - Router - switch then connect each computer to the router or switch

The modem will only hand out one IP address, so whichever component connects first will get the IP leaving the other component unable to connect.
Move the router next to the modem and then put the gigibit switch upstairs where the router used to be.
