Hi, I am trying to figure out a good OS for my laptop. I currently have a chromebook and a asus something with a i7QM processor so it isn't for me just giving it to a friend the laptop has a 250gig hard drive 2 gigs of ram and the worst part about it is this stupid single core AMD processor that peaks almost every time I use chrome or Firefox. I'm not looking to fix it because I know it is just a slow laptop that shouldn't of ever qualified to come with windows 7. It does have a decent video card I think it is the equivalent to the 5450 from AMD, not 100%. I just need help trying to figure out a good lightweight OS to put on it. The person still would like to be able to watch movies, browse the web and watch more movies on youtube. It is also from 2010.

Macpup is easier when learning to use it, but it's your choice. Both perform very good on old PCs, there is no difference but the interface.

Linux or Ubuntu. They don't use many system resources, and they are free. If he for some reason needs a program that isn't available on those OS, another option could be windows 8.1, as it uses less system resources than W7.
But if he won't do anything else that what you said, Linux is enough.

But before that, my advice is trying the Maxthon explorer, as it is faster than chrome and firefox, even in low-end PCs.

Well I went with Xubuntu 64bit, macpup and crunchbang only offered downloads through torrents which I hate so I didn't download. Well the macpup did have a mirror but the site wasn't functional. Just going to have fun importing old bookmarks from chrome and firefox as well as transferring my other stuff over 200gigs worth to my nas over the network. IDE based but it goes pretty fast about 113MBPs have like 12 drives in it.
