First off whats the difference between all the versions? is it just aesthetic or does it actually improve on the internals? also personal/professional experience/opinions on this psu would be helpful. For the price being $179 against the next 1000w psu which is $245 its great, reviews on the V1 say its quiet and reliable and well in spec until you pull more power than rated (1050 watts). All and any help appreciated!

I wouldn't bother with it. Not considering it's such a large wattage power supply and provides so little amperage on the 12v rails. It could put you in a position of potentially trying to run a power hungry graphics card which by all rights should run on half the listed wattage but fails to do so because it's starved for amps. At 1000w (or 1050 in this case) it should cover potentially any and all power needs outside of extreme cases.

You'd be better off with something like this antec hcg (I believe a rebadged seasonic unless I'm mistaken). Same 5yr warranty, only 150w less than that cougar - but the 4 12v rails all support 40a vs the 25a supported on the 12v rails of the cougar...

I am running one with 9 fans, Asrock extreme9, FX-9790 running @ 4.7/5.0 Ghz, xspc baycooler with pump, 4 x 4Gb ram and 2 x R9 285. no problems so far. Each PCI-e cable is good for 25amps. 25amp x 12 volts = 300watts. R9 285 pull around 200 watts at stock speeds. It uses 2 of them on each video card. I believe that each 12v rail can shut down the power supply if it is in overcurrent condition. Ok nothing is overclocked. The CPU is running at default settings. If I was going to overclock, I would have used a EVGA super nova 1300 watt for the same set of components
