Mem usage goes to 100%, system locks for 5-30 seconds.

This happens every couple of minutes, then snaps back to normal. In task manager, shows CPU usage @ 4% and memory usage @ 98%. Dogs the performance to the point 5-30 secs between click and action. Confident no virus or malware. Bare bones machine, running chrome, ms office, AVG. 4 gb ram with virtual memory at recommended level (5950). Help!!!

Try uninstalling AVG and see if the issue is still present. You can use MSE in the meantime if you feel unprotected.
But it might be that 4GB of memory is insufficient if there are several apps open at once. Especially with MS office. What you may be seeing is the off-loading to disk that takes place when system memory does not have enough room.
