Hello,

I have a continious problem with my Phenom II X4 940 cooler heatsink retention bracket (that sits between motherboard and the cooler on 4 screws) - it keeps breaking one (the same) hook every 2 weeks - 2 months depending on the used bracket. In general over 5 brackets were broken already. I don't know what to do, keeping replacing them and they keep breaking. Stock size black AMD cooler is being used which is already 5 years old.

The symptoms of the problem is that I start hearing cranks from time to time when CPU fan is running at higher RPMs (during gaming, burning DVDs in Nero etc.) and after a couple of weeks it cranks loudly and the heatsink fan retention lever shoots off with a broken bracket hook.

Can anybody advise me what is the possible remedy to this? I suspect this is being caused by the vibrations of the old CPU cooler, though CPU temps are 44 degrees Celsius idle and it is running rather quiet. Thermal paste has been changed recently and other bracket broke again. I have ordered Arctic Silver Alpine 64 Pro Rev 2 cooler as a replacement - will it fix the problem?

Also, the cooler was rather noisy a couple of times and I sprayed some WD-40 on the rotation axis to remove the noise (which disappered after that).

The breaking bracket is like this:
