PSU for future sli

Hi all. I've already read many Q&A about psu for sli but i'm still a little worried on what psu to buy for my system. My build so far includes:

Asus rampage V extreme x99
i7 5930k
G.skill ram 16GB
A creative sound blaster Zx sound card
WD hdd 4t
Samsung Evo 840 500 GB ssd
Corsair H100i water cooler
2 extra SP120 corsair fans

For Gpu ill buy a gtx 970 and later on i'll upgrade to sli. My question is what PSU to buy in terms of watts and quality. I'm thinking an EVGA P2 platinum 1200W in case i'll upgrade even more but i'm still not sure. Pls help, any assistance will be great.

You're going way overkill. A quality 750W will hold your 2 way SLI build just fine, get a 850W for 3 way SLI capability, or at max a 1kW for lots (too much tbh) of headroom. An EVGA 850W G2 will do the job just fine, no need to shell out for something you can't utilize.

Yes. That is a great PSU given you have the budget. Other options are antec 1000w gold certified. Cooler master 1000w platinum certified. But these are rather costly PSUs. I was wondering. If you want to do just 2 GPU sli then go with a seasonic 850w gold certified. Ofc given the processor you've got, it does make sense for a 3 way sli. Remember that 970's take about a 160w each. That's a max of 480w ( 3 way sli ) for your GPU. Then there's the CPU. Add up the total and then leave about 20-25% of your max PSU wattage free. ( given you get gold or higher PSU ). That's gonna be all. Happy gaming
 


Cards in multiple GPU mode (SLI) do not take up as much power as in single GPU mode. Multiplying power consumption with the number of cards used is not a correct way to get total GPUs' power consumption.

Well yes. But that's the max they'll go with simultaneous parallelism on all cards. They'll not exceed 480Watts. That's what I meant. Sorry if it seemed the other way. Didn't notice that I didn't say "max". We don't know exact algorithms. But that's a fairly good estimate of how far it can get

To say the truth, most of the time, the cards don't even exceed 60% of their maximum power draw. And when at idle they've virtually no power consumption. But nobody says that 970's are 160W at 60% or things like that. ( you get the idea of what I'm trying to say right? No? Ah..... :p leave it. Perhaps I'm being more confusing that I think I'm being. )
