I have recently completed my pc build but, upon installation of windows, I was told my windows key was invalid. My question is, can I buy a valid cd key and use it on my computer, or do i have to get a new disk. The casing is just the standard windows packaging, but I'm not sure if the software on the disk is just for upgrades or can be used on an empty hard drive. Thank you for taking the time to read.

you can't buy win 7 keys anymore from microsoft. you can buy a copy of win 7 elsewhere that comes with a key.

do i understand your situation right? you installed win7 from a disk and it would not accept your win 7 upgrade key? did you get all the way to the desktop before entering this key to be told it does not work? or did the installation stop when you entered your upgrade key and never really get started?

each scenario is slightly different and means something different.

edit: oh and one more... is this an official windows disk or a burned copy made from an iso somewhere? if it is a genuine windows disk, it will tell you what version it is. this will be helpful for us to know.

You can't buy 'just a key' for Windows 7. The license is what costs, not the install media.
As we out here do not what you have, there is no way for anyone to tell if it is an Upgrade or otherwise.

What did you purchase, from where?

Hello... 1 ) Where did you get it?
2 ) What Windows OS version is it?
3 ) Did a Phone number come up on the screen to call Microsoft? They can help you with buying a License.
4 ) If you want to Buy retail you will get a Disk, and having a GOOD known Disk in your hands, and a valid Key, is a good thing

Yeah, that probably is not going to work. 1 license, 1 PC.

"Invalid" because it has already been used.

Ok so something really strange just happened, i accidentally pressed enter when there was nothing in the text bar (the one to enter the key) and it started windows, what the hell? This isn't a joke, I'm not sure if i have activated the 30 day trial (how do i check if i have?) but i never selected a trial or anything.

if your friend is still using that key on his pc, then you can't use it as well and will need to buy your own copy of windows. win 7 64 bit home premium is about $100 and can be gotten through most online stores such as amazon, newegg, tigerdirect.....

edit: keep an eye on it, if it's activated and working, then thank say a quiet thank you and let it ride :)

Not strange. For Win 7, you can bypass entering the license key for 30 days.
