Gigabyte z97x-sli slow Ethernet issue

Hi, I built my first computer and used the gigabyte z97x-sli as my motherboard and I am having issues with my ethernet cable. When set to auto negotiation the link speed is 10Mbps/Full Duplex and if change it to anything else manually, it says there is no ethernet cable plugged in. I've tested the ethernet port with my laptop (wifi turned off) and I got around 54mbps down and 5 up via speedtest but when I plug it into my new pc , I usually cannot get a download speed or a speed of less than 1mbps. I originally got all the drivers from the cd that came with the mobo but afterwards I downloaded them from gigabytes official website and ran the setups again. I don't think its a mobo issue since the ethernet light is flashing and my cpu, gpu, and sata connections work fine. I heard there are some bios setting that need to be changed? Also I'll try booting in safe mode to see if that works. Does anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks.

Solution
For Gigabit interfaces the interface has to be set to Auto and it should connect in full duplex mode. If you have a 16 port switch, then you also have other systems and you should perform a large file transfer (a few hundred MBs) from and to another system; using the Internet is not a reliable local network speed test. If your laptop has a Gigabit connection, then use it to test with your PC. Connect your PC and the laptop directly to the switch via stub cables. You can also check if your new PC performs normally if the wall plate and cable are bypassed. I just built a PC with that motherboard and its performance is excellent on my Gigabit network.

I think I'm connected to a gigabit network. I'm connected to a wall port that's connected to a modem. The modem I'm connecting to is a netgear prosafe 16 port gigabit switch model GS 116.

I think I might have found my problem. I was using a cat5 patch cable instead of a 5e. However now whenever I plug in my 5e or 6 patch cable I always get an "unidentified network limited access" error even though the cat5 cable works. My OS is windows 8.1.

Have you connected the PC directly to the switch using a known good patch cable? You get an unidentified network because the system isn't getting valid information from the DHCP server; do you see a valid local IP address when you execute ipconfig /all from a command prompt? Can you ping the router?

The unidentified network error seemed to go away by itself. Unfortunately I can't connect my PC directly to the switch with an Ethernet cable since the switch is in a pretty hard to reach location. The patch cables work fine (tested it on my laptop) and the wall ports work fine as well. On my laptop my link speed is 100mbps while my PC has a link speed of 10mbps (tested with both a cat5 and a cat6 cable). Both computers have a gigabit ethernet controller. I feel like my motherboard is throttling down my speeds but when I try to manually change the link speed to 100mbps full Duplex, my computer can no longer detect the ethernet cable.

Never mind. after manually changing the link speed to 100mbps Full Duplex and unplugging and re-plugging the cat6 ethernet cable multiple times. I was able to connect with a 100mbps link speed. Thanks for all the help GhislainG. Finally I can use the internet without waiting years for a webpage to load!
