I just bought a Dell Latitude E6400. It came with a genuine version of Windows 7 pro 32. I pulled the activation key (used 2 separate programs to make sure) and re-installed to a 64x version of windows 7 pro. The key did not work, it was <Redacted. Do NOT post keys here>, I say this on the internet without worry because I found out that is just some general Dell key. I looked under the battery and found a COA sticker, but it is for Vista (and does not work for 7, and I have not verified it works for Vista). What should I do, contact the guy I bought it from? Contact Dell? If nothing else, do they still sell those $40 upgrade cds?

Looks like the seller upgraded it from Vista to Windows 7. Whatever he did, the key is valid only for 32-bit Windows 7.
Upgrades to any edition of Windows 7 through PC manufacturers are no longer available, nor are they available in software stores, though you may find legal copies with a genuine key at some online vendors websites (eg Amazon).

One thing I can tell you is that Windows 8 is not supported on that model (no drivers have been released).

I re-installed windows again but x86 and still no luck. I contacted the guy i bought this from and he says it came with win 7, he did not upgrade it. This makes sence because it came with that general dell product key.

How did you format???

Did you format the drive fully or leave files intact.

If you leave some files intact while installing windows.It will leave stuff be hind.So this could be your problem.

Left over files from a previous install can cause errors.

It was a full reinstall. The problem is the key on the bottom was for Vista32. The laptop according to the original owner came with Windows 7 x86. I am going to try calling Dell, but if this goes how dell calls historically go it will be a dead end. It saddens me but it is looking like I need to pay another 100$.

Hmm that should not matter.

But read this-->>http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Windows-7-activation-error-invalid-product-key

If the COA is for Vista then the laptop originally shipped with Vista, not Windows 7, doesn't matter what the last owner says.

I have reason to believe that he is not lying. The computer also didn't have a general windows key on it (as I said I used a program). It had an OEM key that dell uses. The system was genuine before the format.

Smells like road runner kill to me.

COA s are notoriously bad a lot of times.This is one reason way i build my own system.So that i don't have to put up with this kinda issue.
